Skin Boosters
Skin boosters are injectables that enhance the skin’s appearance. Treatment results include augmented skin volume and diminished wrinkle lines. With the skin naturally aging from reduced collagen production and reactive oxygen species breaking down antioxidants in the tissues, skin boosters are applied to intervene in those processes by fortifying the extracellular environment. Based on the ingredients injected, the skin will be treated for an anti-aging look in various ways. The development and variety of skin boosters allow multiple ways to decelerate aging with skin boosters.
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
Hyaluronic acid (HA) skin boosters come in different types, each with unique characteristics like varying particle sizes, levels of cross-linking, and ease of injection. HA is naturally found in the skin and is known for its ability to retain moisture, support hydration, and promote the production of growth factors that help maintain healthy skin. These boosters serve multiple purposes, including adding moisture to the skin, exerting antioxidant effects to increase volume in the skin’s deeper layers, and boosting collagen production. HA is especially effective at retaining water, making it great for preventing dryness and adding volume to the skin.
There are two main types of HA used in skin boosters: non-cross-linked and low-cross-linked HA. Non-cross-linked HA fillers provide less volume and don’t last as long, but they spread easily through the skin and are less likely to cause lumps or irregularities. This makes them ideal for delicate areas like the skin around the eyes. On the other hand, cross-linked HA fillers are more effective at adding volume and have longer-lasting results, making them better suited for areas of the face that need more lift and support, like the cheeks or jawline. HA has been combined with glycerol to preserve skin barrier integrity and regulate moisture levels to improve skin hydration, elasticity, firmness, and glow.

Biostimulatory Fillers
Unlike HA fillers, these fillers enhance the skin by stimulating collagen production to deliver long-lasting volume. Sculptra®, which uses poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), is known for stimulating collagen production and was originally used for patients with significant facial volume loss. Injectable poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is used to add structure, volume, and definition to the face. Over time, your body naturally breaks down PLLA into water and carbon dioxide. The results from PLLA develop gradually over several months, producing natural results.
Poly-D, L-Lactic Acid (PDLLA) is another polymer used for biostimulatory fillers, maximizing the contact surface area involved in collagen production. Similar to Sculptra®, PDLLA stimulates collagen production. It is used for volume restoration and face contouring.
Calcium Hydroxylapatite, Radiesse®, is an alternative option for biostimulatory fillers. Radiesse® is a volumizing agent and collagen stimulator that improves the appearance of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the nasolabial folds.
The skin boosting ingredient chosen for the biostimulatory filler will depend on the location of the treatment and the goals to enhance the area.

Exosomes
Exosomes are tiny particles that that carry important information between skin cells, contributing to wound healing and rejuvenation of the skin.
Exosomes help with skin boosting by stimulating fibroblasts, which are cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin. By promoting collagen and elastin production, exosomes help improve skin texture, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and make the skin firmer and more elastic. They also promote the regeneration of the skin by influencing the extracellular matrix (ECM), which supports the skin cells. They help remodel the ECM, which is important for wound healing and preventing scarring. Through their action on fibroblasts and other skin cells, exosomes assist in skin repair and rejuvenation.
Skin boosters enhance skin hydration and stimulate collagen production. The properties of skin boosting ingredients help achieve a volumized and youthful appearance. Speaking with your dermatologist will help determine which skin boosting treatment is best for you.
