You may have heard of people using retinoids, but what are they? Retinoids are vitamin A derived compounds known for their versatile benefits on the skin’s appearance. The topical form has been proven to reduce and prevent acne scars, improve skin tone, and reduce fine lines and wrinkles by promoting the surface of skin cells and boosting collagen.
Adapalene is a topical retinoid for acne treatment found in prescription formulations such as tretinoin, isotretinoin, and trifarotene. For psoriasis patients, tazarotene is a prescribed retinoid to manage scaly skin. Over-the-counter medications contain retinol, a type of retinoid that is lower in strength but still effective with consistent use.
TRETINOIN
As mentioned earlier, Tretinoin is a prescription retinoid. Tretinoin is the only FDA-approved retinoid for treating photodamaged skin. The topical has been proven to thicken skin by increasing collagen production, helping to minimize wrinkles and fine lines. Tretinoin is safe for long-term use.
HOW TO USE RETINOIDS:
Mix a pea-sized amount with moisturizer and apply to the area of concern at night time only. Retinoids make your skin more sensitive to the sun. To provide extra protection to your skin during the day, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sun-protective clothing.
When beginning to use retinoids, it is important to start with a lower strength retinoid formulation and use it every other night so that the skin does not get too irritated. Using a retinoid daily and increasing the formulation strength should only occur once the skin tolerates the medication.
WHO SHOULD NOT USE RETINOIDS:
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People with redness or inflammation
Adding a retinoid to your nighttime routine is a choice approved by many dermatologists. Its potent mechanism to rejuvenate the skin makes it an anti-aging element. If you choose to implement retinoids into your routine, be sure to begin with a small concentration at a frequency that does not irritate your skin. Over time, you can use a stronger formula daily to help maintain a youthful appearance.
